I am a driving instructor based in Aylesbury, operating under the name of Mini Motoring, which is my own independent driving school. I have recorded a very high success rate of test passes since 1994, which is how long I have been a DSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

I did work for a time as a driving instructor in Aylesbury with the AA and BSM driving schools. However, since running Mini Motoring, and been accepted onto the Buckinghamshire County Council Get in Gear young driver training team, my skills have been upgraded through advanced driver training.

Developing my Skills As a Driving Instructor

When you look on the Internet you will see websites for many Aylesbury driving schools, but whilst I qualified as a high grade ADI (Approved Driving Instructor), I have continually looked at my own driver development. I have always aimed at improving my skills to deliver more advanced driver training.

In 2008 I was recruited to the Buckinghamshire County Council intensive driver training programme for young drivers, called Get in Gear, and this required that I took some futher driver training. The course helps young people, who have just passed their test, to become better equipped for the road. Having seen it in action, Get in Gear offers a very credible alternative to Pass Plus.

Driving instructors in Aylesbury, and surrounding areas, were invited to apply for Get in Gear. I was one out of only four driving instructors in Aylesbury, out of the 50 who applied, who were accepted during my intake for Get in Gear. I am very proud of my achievement to be part of this prestigeous scheme for young driver training. Julian Smith, who was on the interview panel for Get in Gear, wrote:

To get to the required standard I received advanced driver training from Ride Drive, a National company based in Aylesbury and working from an emergency services background. This has enabled me to improve my delivery of driver training, making Mini Motoring a better equipped and more advanced driving school.

Using My Own Driver Training Experience

In 1984 it was my turn to learn to drive, but my experience was not good. I had one particular driving instructor who was very abusive and used to waste my time; time that I was paying my hard earned money for. Needless to say, I didn’t keep him for long.

I tried a few different driving schools, but just seemed to pick the wrong people. However, eventually I found someone who inspired me, a really good driving instructor. Instead of destroying me, and making me feel miserable, he gave me confidence and taught me skills that really helped me to learn to drive well. I still use a lot of the techniques now when I deliver driver training.

It is because of how I was treated when I wanted to learn to drive that has made me very understanding and sympathetic to any learner when I deliver driver training.

My experience has also taught me it’s not just a question of knowing facts, but understanding how to apply the knowledge, and in what context, that is most the most important part of driver training. I therefore make sure I explain these aspects well, and because I am operating under the name of Mini Motoring Driving School, and to maintain my reputation, I make sure I deliver good quality driver training.
